Lubrizol: TPU for vegan synthetic leather applications

Lubrizol Engineered Polymers announced that it has developed a high-performing Estane thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) solution for vegan and sustainable synthetic leather applications that delivers high durability, enhanced comfort and pleasing aesthetics. This advanced Estane TPU technology also contributes to cleaner air quality in vehicle interiors due to its lower volatile organic content, said the company.

Lubrizol is partnering with industry-leading players to meet the growing demand to enhance consumer’s driving experience with automotive interiors that are stylish, durable, highly functional, while also balancing a reduced impact on the environment. This new application of Estane technology does not use any solvents and can be recycled, improving the overall sustainability footprint. (The recyclability is based on access to a readily available standard recycling program that supports such materials. Products may not be available in all areas.)

The Estane TPU technology can be processed by extrusion or calendaring. This enables synthetic leather producers to use the TPU in their existing processes. It offers a high-performing solution with excellent wear and crack resistance, soft-touch haptics, and design versatility with colors and embossing, said Lubrizol.
